granny square is a classic crochet motif that's easy to make and perfect for beginners. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to making a basic granny square:

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn (any color)
  • Crochet hook (size recommended for your yarn)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

Instructions:

Step 1: Make a Slip Knot & Foundation Chain

  1. Make a slip knot and place it on your crochet hook.
  2. Chain 4 (ch 4).
  3. Slip stitch (sl st) into the first chain to form a small ring.

Step 2: Round 1 - First Cluster

  1. Chain 3 (ch 3) — counts as the first double crochet (dc).
  2. Make 2 dc into the ring (this forms your first 3-dc cluster).
  3. Chain 2 (ch 2) to form a corner.
  4. Make 3 dc into the ring, then ch 2 (repeat 3 more times for a total of 4 clusters).
  5. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 to join the round.
  6. (Optional) Change color by fastening off and attaching a new yarn.

Step 3: Round 2 - Expanding the Square

  1. Slip stitch to the next ch-2 space (corner space).
  2. Chain 3 (ch 3) (counts as the first dc), then 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner space.
  3. Chain 1 (ch 1).
  4. In the next corner space, make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
  5. Repeat around, ending with a slip stitch into the top of the starting chain-3.

Step 4: Continue Growing Your Square

  • For each new round:
    • Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into each corner space.
    • Work 3 dc into each side space, separated by ch 1.
    • Always join with a slip stitch at the end of each round.

Step 5: Finish & Weave in Ends

  • Once your square reaches the desired size, fasten off.
  • Use a yarn needle to weave in any loose ends.

Tips:

  • You can keep adding rounds to make your granny square as big as you like!
  • Experiment with different color changes on each round for a fun look.
  • Combine multiple squares to create blankets, pillow covers, or bags.
